Today was a huge day, unfortunately not for scenery or pleasure. But today we rode 600 miles in about 12 hours and it rain for 11 of those hours. We woke up in Whitehorse with the intention to do 600 miles and ride to Fort Nelson B.C. We had a good breakfast at the same place where we had dinner and left only 30 minutes later than we wanted to. The sun was out and shining to the fullest for the first hour of our ride. We passed a couple of lakes with blue water and a mountain backdrop. We were on a mission so I wouldn't let Kevin stop for photos. We pressed on into the clouds, and the rain started light. We put on the rain gear and continued. The drizzle turned into a full on downpour and stayed that way all day long until we reached our destination at 9pm.
We were on the Alaska Highway which is know to be a bumpy rough twisty road with tons of scenery and wildlife along the way. We did experience the bumpy, twisty, rough part, with a couple long gravel sections thrown in. We saw a herd of buffalo sitting on the side of the road, and two black bears in the grass later. Most of the scenery was blocked by the clouds and rain, so we didn't get the full effect. We passed many lakes and streams including a "lake Muncho" which was some of the bluest water I've ever seen in a lake. (I've included a photo that is not mine to show some of the color of the lake.)
We stopped in Laird to dry off a little and have some coffee. We felt bad for drinking the free coffee and dripping water on everything, so we ordered two piece of garlic bread. The waitress looked at us as if we were aliens.
We pressed on, though the miserable conditions until we reached Fort Nelson. I pulled into the Super 8 motel and got a room. Didn't care what it cost, we just wanted to be dry and not riding anymore. We had some dinner across the street and now, back at the room we have everything hanging up in some fashion or another. Gloves on the picture frames, shirts on lamps, and even Eric's socks in the microwave.
We will try and do around 300 miles tomorrow ending in Dawson Creek. BC. It's still a long way from home but I am glad to be pointing in the right direction.
My one shot in Whitehorse
