Atlanta to Alaska to Key West and back.

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Not too much to talk about for today. We got out of our tents around 8:00 and walked across the lawn to have breakfast in the restaurant. After a couple slow cooked pancakes we packed everything up and hit the road for another day in the saddle. I had driven this road before on my way back from Tok after Eric’s crash, so it was nice to see the same sights but without clouds and rain.

The frost heaves were back making the ride exciting. We would stand on the pegs for a few minutes at a time when the heaves were bad. We only made a couple of stops for gas and bathrooms with some photo time squeezed in. When we arrived in Tok we went to the Thompson Eagle Campsite that I researched the night before. We pulled into a neat narrow dirt road that snaked it way through the trees. There were a couple cabins, plenty of tent space and my teepee! I got dibs on it before we even arrived. Once inside my teepee I found a couple of Alaska magazines and two cots for sleeping. I noticed a few mosquitoes in there so I decided to bring in my tent to use as a bug house. So I pushed the cots aside and made my home within a home. The other guys are spread out down the road in there tents. We are sitting in the Grumpy Grizz for a late lunch. Now we relax and enjoy the campsite and small town of Tok, Alaska.

About Me

Curtis Baker
This Alaska trip has been in the planning stages for almost two years. I hope to capture my thoughts and feelings while living on the road thousands of miles away from my home. I look forward to coping with the challenges of the road. Being home sick and traveling with a group of six will both be big challenges.

Welcome

This Blog will be used to track my travels during my motorcycle trip to Alaska. I will be Leaving Atlanta May 22nd, travel out west until I get to New Mexico. I will turn north and head up through Utah visiting a few national parks including Arches and Monument Valley. We will stop off in Salt Lake City then visit the Bonneville Salt Flats for some great photos. I will meet up with the rest of my travel mates in Seattle where the bikes will get new tires and fresh oil. The six of us will head further north into British Columbia to catch our ferry in Prince Rupert. After a couple of days on the ferry, we disembark in Haines Alaska, where we will begin a two week tour of all Alaska has to offer including Mt. McKinley in the Denali National Park. We will meet up with a large group of folks for the Dust to Dawson rally which travels from Anchorage to Dawson City in The Yukon. From there we begin riding south through Banff and then Montana. We plan on seeing as many National parks as we can along the way. As we hit the plain states, we will make time on the highways and get to Atlanta around the 4th of July.
After a couple of nights in Atlanta doing laundry and showering over and over, A few of us will start the Journey south to Key West Florida. We will spend one night there relaxing and taking pictures of the southern most point indicator. Then we head north and speed back to Atlanta where I will be able to park the bike for while.
This trip is planned for nine weeks on the road. Most night will be spent in campgrounds in a tent and some people's homes. Mainly to keep cost down. But sleeping outdoors while riding a motorcycle really makes the whole experience more of an accomplishment in my mind. A full outdoor experience.

Enjoy

A little about me..

Curtis Bonds Baker, born Aug. 3rd 1978 in Atlanta Georgia.  Married to Angela Baker since October 2005. I have been a self employed Carpenter about for the past eight years.
I grew up riding and racing bicycles, feeling comfortable on two wheels led me to trying motorcycles. A friend taught let me ride his Honda Shadow and I became hooked. I then bought a 1991 BMW from another friend who was selling his and now I am currently riding my second motorcycle, a 2006 r1200 GS adventure.
I enjoy riding and traveling because of the feeling of freedom and total control. One of the best feelings while on a trip is waking up and know that I get to ride again.
